At the same time that the cotton manufacturers Horrockses, Crewdson & Co of Preston, Lancashire, were establishing a market for high quality cotton dresses and other women’s wear under the name of Horrockses Fashions (See Related Items) they continued to produce the dress fabrics for which they were already known. A double page spread in the Vogue Pattern Book of April-May 1954 gives a flavour of many of their current fabrics available to the home dressmaker (which were roughly contemporary with two of the dresses in the John Bright Collection) and the quality of the illustration employed for their advertising. An extremely chic and slightly haughty lady dressed in black examines various bolts of printed cotton, choosing one to be made up by herself or by her dressmaker.
