Wool trimmed with silk braid

This practical suit, ideal for walking and other outdoor pursuits, has been made from warm, hardwearing brown and green checked tweed, simply trimmed with plain brown wool at the neck and cuffs, the circular braid motifs echoing the large pearl buttons. The jacket is lined in dashing striped maroon silk, perhaps recognising that it might be removed and seen. By the early 20th Century the suit was completely established as a garment for the active woman, having developed from the later 19th Century tailor mades based on riding habits and menswear, and from warm woollen dresses, albeit with unremovable boned bodices, such as that seen as a Related Item.
