Silk tulle embroidered with metallic and silk threads
This delicate stole of fine pink tulle has been embroidered each end with a spray of semi-naturalistic flowers flanked by a pair of quarter circles, reflecting a growing trend towards geometric motifs that dominated Art Deco style. Interest in the simplified flower forms was achieved not only through the shading of the colours of the silks but in the variations of their thickness. They were embroidered with a tambour hook that passed the thread through the fabric to produce a chain stitch; this technique, using both silk and metallic threads, had been employed in high quality clothing since its introduction into Europe from India in the mid 18th Century.
