1920s-30s

This silk fabric, while never identified as a design of the Cornish block printing company Crysède, demonstrates many of its characteristics. A rural landscape has been abstracted into a flat plane of trees, flowers and animals grazing, with little regard for scale; the inclusion of dinghies sailing on a choppy sea reflects the proximity of the coastline, so often a feature of Crysède designs. Black, white and lime green on a hot orange ground give a great vibrancy, as do the series of diagonal, horizontal and radiating lines that suggest the brushstrokes of the landscape paintings upon which so many Crysède designs were based. Like ‘London Pride’ (See Related Items) the scale of the motif is relatively small, the depth of the repeat being 40 cms, compared to many Crysède designs.
