Silk

This silk panel, one of three in the design belonging to the collection, is brocaded with a distinctive design of spiky-edged flowers and rambling roses. It may originate from Lyon, the major centre of French silk weaving, Tours, a long-established but smaller and declining industry, or from England where the influence of French designs had increased following the end of the Seven Years War in 1763. The Victoria and Albert Museum owns a panel similarly brocaded with spiky flowers and roses on a green ground, of superior quality, probably woven in Lyons (T.130-1986).
