Silk
This panel comprises four short lengths of brocaded silk joined together. Flowers and foliage and a delicate lacy ground pattern have been woven in a limited range of coloured silks with a design across the width of the fabric symmetrical to a vertical axis, known as a point repeat. A silk of similar character can be found in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Woven in Lyon, the centre of the French silk industry, it is, however, a grander example, incorporating expensive metal thread and with a self-patterned, or foot-figured ground.
